The Yin and Yang of Dominance and Submission

So a very common mentality often held is the idea that dominance and submission are somehow opposites of each other and exist of a spectrum of dominance to submission. Worse, many new players, especially online ones with no real experience, have a mentally where anyone who isn't fully dominant (i.e. a switch) is just a submissive getting uppity, bratty or just bullying the other subs. This mentality is both harmful to the overall community and the individual, and simply false.

So if dominance and submission aren't opposites in a spectrum what are they? A much better way is to think of them as two different spectrums from Dominant/Submissive to not Dominant/Submissive or another words, a political compass. Someone can exist anywhere on either spectrum at any point in time, with their position able to freely shift on either independently of the other. It's completely possible for someone to exist at the extreme of being a dominant and a Submissive at once, or to completely neither. She herself is a good example of this, able to be very submissive towards her Owners while at the same time being almost absolutely dominant towards her subs (with some expectations). In practice it's rare for anyone to be totally at any one of the four extremes instead usually floating towards one of the four corners based their mood and overall preferences.

Further more, dominance and submission are not totally independent of each other, even if their spectrums are. Instead they exist as a kind of Yin and Yang, coexisting within each of us, even the hardest dominant or the most broken submissive has the capacity for both if the situation and individual stir it. This means that, once you become aware of this balance and the coexistence, you can use them to feed each other. Letting your dominance push your submission to new depths, and you submission drive your dominance to new hights.

Finally, regardless of what side of a scene someone is on, an experienced player will tell you they always have a much better time with someone who knows, understands and has experience from both sides. For dominant, knowing what it is like for your submissive, understanding how things feel and what they could want can help you structure things in a way to make the experience as enjoyable for you and your submissive. On the other hand, as a submissive knowing how things work from the Dominant side let's you communicate things more concisely, understand the difficulties your dominant might run into and give better feedback on how things are going. Regardless of which side you are on, the experience form one side can also give you ideas and inspiration for what you want from the other and provide you an opportunity to learn from someone who already has those skills and experience.
